So thanks for hanging with me...we're in the midst of another move...yes, another. But this time, let's hope it's for awhile as we have found our dream home. Once we're settled in, I'll have to post some photos, but we are knee deep in painting and basement remodeling, so it's a bit of a mess.

Well, I love my Mother (Nature), but she had different plans for my Matilda Jane House of Clouds trunk show last night. Since I had it at my home, I set everything up and ironically prayed that no one would show up in the 40 MPH winds and snow - just horrible weather! One trooper of a friend stopped out briefly, but ended up quickly leaving to beat the ensuing snowfall and worsening wind gusts...what a friend she is (thank you Sara!!!)...so, I have rescheduled the Matilda Jane House of Clouds Open House for this Saturday, February 5th from 1:00 - 3:00 pm CST.

The GREAT news is that I am accepting online/virtual orders for that show! So you can live miles away from me and still place an order :) Yipee! Maybe you're stuck inside for the second day in a row with all this snow...relax and shop House of Clouds! If you are interested in the virtual option, please visit the Matilda Jane website and find their WISHLIST. Here you will be able to add the items in the sizes and quantities you desire and email your wishlist directly to me.

I will follow up with you for payment information (MC or VISA) via email or phone. As for shipping, you can have it directly shipped to you (a tad more expensive than the flat trunk show shipping) or I'm offering trunk shipping (a flat $4) that will be shipped to me, I sort the orders and then ship to you...less expensive, but it takes about 4-5 more business days once it gets to me to get out to you. All orders are shipping out around 3 weeks. The BIG Announcement

It's official - I can now let the cat out of the bag!!! I know I've kept quite a few of you wondering when I had announced earlier I had some big news and what it all meant. I had a few very interesting guesses (no, we're not pregnant, we're not moving again and I'm not joining the circus). Let me ease you into the news...those that know me well will say I am a diehard fan of Matilda Jane Clothing...I'm not as extreme as some ladies out there (not that it's a bad thing), but I own my share of pieces for my daughter and myself, and love them to bits. For those of you not familiar with Matilda Jane Clothing, please let me introduce you to this wonderful and artsy clothing company!

Denise DeMarchis started Matilda Jane Clothing a few years ago selling her handcrafted clothing at art fairs when she was convinced by supportive family and friends to follow her dream and make it into a real business. Well, that is just what she's done, and it's a thriving business at that! You MUST take a few minutes to peruse through her beautiful new website and visit the different collections she offers. The clothing is the perfect juxtaposition of sweetness and spunk right down to each and every detail such as the buttons, the ribbon trim...pure creativity!

The bulk of her clothing is for girls in sizes 6 months to 6 years for children and the tween line for sizes 8 years to 12 years.

In a Blog Fog...

Hello readers! I have returned! My apologies that I have been away for awhile - was it really October? *blush* The end of 2010 brought some urgency to SIMPLIFY - daily activities, personal belongings, etc. in order to start 2011 off on the right foot. I took a well needed break from blogging, reading blogs, and being online in search of overall balance. So far, so good!

Ali Edwards sponsors these wonderful Big Picture Classes for scrapbookers. One of the workshops is called 'One Little Word'. From her blog, she explains, "A single word can be a powerful thing. It can be the ripple in the pond that changes everything. It can be sharp and biting or rich and soft and slow. From my own personal experience, it can be a catalyst for enriching your life." Following her lead, the word I have selected for 2011 is COMMIT. This year is about challenging myself to make good choices about opportunities that are presented to me, commit to them and follow them through to completion. The rule of thumb states it takes 21 days (3 weeks) to develop a behavior into a habit. Lisa Leonard designs beautiful jewelry and offers a simple but gorgeous necklace (pictured below) that could serve as a wonderful reminder of your chosen word. Please check out Lisa's shop and blog for more inspiration and a glimpse into her world and the love she shares.

Some positive commitments I have made so far are:

1) I've changed my eating habits (eliminated soda and lost 3 pounds so far)
2) I've made more dedicated time for my daughter during the day
3) I'm planning on setting up some TRUE date nights with my husband
4) I have some exciting developments in my work life - I still will remain a stay-at-home mom, but have found something that will allow me to contribute monetarily to my family. Stay tuned as I will share more in a later post...very, very soon!
5) I've identified craft projects that have been started but never finished (we all have some of those, right?!?)
6) I've promised myself not to accumulate or buy any new or unnecessary craft supplies until I've depleted my current supply (seriously, I could open up my own shop tomorrow)

At the end of 2010, we sorted and purged through most of our boxes and totes in storage and happily donated ten (10) boxes and fourteen (14) huge bags of miscellaneous items to people in need. Boy did that feel wonderful! And we're still not done - we have about ten to fifteen boxes to still sort through.

Have you set some goals for yourself this year? Maybe you've chosen one little word...if so, do you care to share? As they say, if you put it out there either by saying it or writing it down, the more likely you are to COMMIT to that goal. Shop the Unexpected

The summer has been busy as with the start of school, so I apologize for my disappearance. We've also been ill recently which hasn't helped with staying on top of the to do list. One thing I did want to share was a recent AWESOME purchase at a local resale shop. I am still in shock and still floating on cloud 9. I stopped in our Once Upon A Child (children's resale/consignment shop) to pick up a new rewards punch card and walked past Plato's Closet (tween resale/consignment shop) next door. I rarely, if ever, go into that shop but something inside me said to stop in. As I walked in, I looked around and thought, why am I in here...I'm not in the mood for clothes shopping...plus I really don't NEED anything else...until I looked across the store and spotted IT. Yes, the it I am talking about is an Orla Kiely square flowers midi sling purse in geranium.

I casually walked up to it thinking, they must have JUST put this out! Why hasn't anyone snatched her up yet?!? Expecting to be tackled for the find, everyone in the store continued to browse around as if I had picked up a plain black shirt. Still in awe, I checked it over expecting the price tag to be something like $85. I was just stalking, I mean - looking - at one on an online discount site. However, they sold out within 2 minutes of posting their sale. Ugh. To my surprise the price tag was $15 and it is in near perfect condition. Are you serious?!? I couldn't get up to the register fast enough. And then, get this...the girl rings it up and says, $7.87. Yes. I about fainted. It was 50% off...THAT day. Seriously?!? She asked if I wanted a bag and I mumbled something like I knew where my car was...that's how much in shock I was.

I left the store, got in to my car and let out a huge scream. I then drove to the nearest gas station and bought a lottery ticket. Unfortunately I didn't win anything on the ticket, but finding that Orla Kiely purse at 3% of retail cost was just like winning the lottery for me that day. My advice ladies: listen to Clarence Clearance when he speaks to you and shop the unexpected. You'll never know what treasures you'll find!

I Did the 'Do!

I LOVE my new hairdo! Not do I only feel 10 pounds lighter (5 inches gone!), but it's much easier to style and will be faster in the mornings to get ready. Love it, love it, love it! Did I tell you how much I love it?

I was pretty apprehensive driving to the salon last night and thought the sudden downpour with 50 mph winds was a sign from above to NOT cut my hair, but I followed through with my commitment, put my trust in my stylist and made the change. I had met Wendi, my new stylist, once at our consultation but immediately liked her personality and warmth.

If you are looking for a top-notch stylist in the Fox Valley, I highly recommend Wendi at Salon Aura. She not only listened to my concerns and wishes, but hit the cut I wanted dead-on. This girl knows how to cut hair. Believe you me, I will be hanging on to this one as long as I can. I couldn't be happier! Thank you Wendi!!! Here are a few pics from (late) last night...

Hair Today...Gone Tomorrow

As of Monday evening, I will bid farewell to my long ponytail and trade it in for a much shorter look for the remainder of summer. I've been debating about it for months and made the commitment when I was able to get into my favorite salon in the Valley. I'm rather excited about the new look but nervous about letting go of the pony. It's been so easy to just pull it back and not fuss with it at all. But it's time to say adieu and introduce you to the new 'do, Bob. If all fares well, I may post some new photos in the slideshow at the top. Keep your fingers crossed.

The web was a buzz around 9pm central time on Thursday night. Why, you ask? Jessica Haley's products from Joyfolie (formerly known as Mia Joie) were uploaded to her website and if you blinked, you missed out - they were gone faster than they arrived. I found Jessica's goodies via Etsy a few years back when shopping for unique things for my little girl. Here are some of my current favorites to show you exactly why I am such a fan of Jessica and her creations.

Start Packing GIVEAWAY!!!

I feel that all I've been doing the past few days is packing...ah yes, the upcoming move...light at the end of the tunnel, light at the end of the tunnel. Anyway, on to the product review and giveaway! You all saw the teaser of the adorable SKIP HOP Zoo Pack Penguin backpack last week, right? Well, he arrived (rather quickly - thank you CSN stores shipping department!) and we tested him out with a little sleepover to Nana and Papa's house. Boy, can this little guy really pack a lot! I've always loved penguins...my mom loves owls...my sister loves hedgehogs. Those would make some really cute backpacks, right? We do have the owl zoo lunchie and yes, he's equally as cute...but I'd love to see a hedgehog created. Would get one for the sis in a heartbeat!

Zoo packs from SKIP HOP are little kid backpacks and lunchpacks where "fun meets function". Their product is PVC-free, Phthalate-free and BPA-free - which in layman's terms means no harmful chemical exposure for your itty-bitty. Yahoo! The interior is deep and roomy - it held quite a bit of the trip essentials. There is a designated gray nametag inside where you can write your child's name or iron/sew on one of their name labels - very nice! The side has an adjustable mesh bottle pocket that expanded very nicely to accommodate our (rather large) sippy cup. The padded, adjustable straps were easy to work and very comfy on my itty-bitty's shoulders...no complaints! Get this, there is a pouch on the front that is insulated just for snacks and has a mesh interior pocket for all your little stuff! How cool is that? This little guy measures 10 inches wide x 11.5 inches high x 4 inches deep - very manageable even for a three year old! And the fabric...a breeze to clean - wipes up very easily. A must for toting it everywhere with a toddler/preschooler.

The pack, however, is not suitable for children under 3 years of age due to small parts (zipper pull attachments are cute little fishies) and a long cord (side bottle pocket cord - it's enclosed, but could be pulled out if stretched very very hard) - just wanted to mention that to you who are entering.

Happy Belated Mother's Day to all the mothers out there! Mine was a wonderful day spent with family including my mom (of course), my sister and her family and my grandmother (98 years old!)...we're moving away very soon and it makes me sad that I won't be able to see them as frequently as I do now. However, we will only be two hours away (driving) so that is not bad at all considering that we could have ended up two days away (driving) with a different job offer. I am very blessed to have my daughter know her great-grandmother and also to be able to document our visits! I'm really wanting to get another photo of the four generations all together before we head out of town...how many generations are currently alive in your family?

Planning for the Big Move (and another GIVEAWAY coming SOON!)

As you know, we are planning a big move back to the city from which we moved...Confused? Yes, so was I when we got the news. Ironic? Eerily. Easy? Well...I could think of many, many other things more painful, so you won't find me complaining. On the bright side, there are many fun things on the horizon like updating our daughter's room to a 'big girl room' and getting her ready for preschool come the fall. If I could open a brick and mortar place, I think I would choose a venue similar to my features today. Have you heard of moomah or The Make Lounge? If not, hurry and check out their websites. Oh, the creativity is just oozing at these two wonderful places. They make the right side of my brain tingle with delight!

moomah :: A place of sweet whimsy, wonder and warmth, moomah is a creative playscape, a cozy café, a living classroom, a quiet hideaway, an art oasis, your neighborhood meeting spot. Your favorite place to be together, and a place for your child to simply be.

These words just jump out at me and beckon me to visit :: whimsy, wonder and warmth. These phrases sing to my heart and creative passion :: creative playscape, living classroom, art oasis. And as a parent, this phrase just makes me smile and is music to my ears :: a place for your child to simply be.

Located in New York City, moomah offers a variety of classes for all ages of children ranging from art to yoga - there's something for everyone! The café provides a healthy eating outlet allowing visitors to choose from a wholesome and sustainable menu and making their selection into a fun presentation. Check out their activity listing for programs for both children and adults. Next time I'm in New York City, I'm going to check this place out.

Next up is The Make Lounge in London. Again, a MUST visit place when I get to the UK.

I know I'm thinking about it...seriously.

A Moving Story

Literally. We are moving again. However, we're moving because the hubs found a job! WOOHOO!!! And we'll ironically be moving back to the city from which we moved (17 years there only to return for a few more I guess)...so he can work for the company that cut his job...but this time as a contractor/consultant. If you're not confused, I give you kudos. Seriously. It took me two days to realize what was going on and what it meant. I think I said to the hubs a few times, "Now explain this to me again..." - he must think I'm crazy. It's like we took a 7 month vacation with our recent move out of that city last Fall...as the hubs reminds me, it was anything but a vacation (unemployment is not fun - we've crossed it off our list hoping we don't have to venture down that path again)...so, let's call it a sabbatical.

We took the crash course in frugality and budgeting...and yes, the art major who always runs away from numbers has become a budgeting queen and 'save' has replaced 'spend' in my vocabulary. My family doesn't know who I am. But I am OK - no more than OK - with this revised thinking I have adapted. God works in funny ways, let me tell you. The lessons He wants us to learn are sometimes the longest roads we take in life. We all need to be refined in different ways and who better to know and guide us than the Heavenly Father. I am grateful for that even though we may not know exactly what His plan of course may be or the paths He takes us down.

Thank you Heavenly Father for blessing us with the security of new employment. Help guide us in the future with decisions we need to make with housing and give us strength to embrace the lessons of frugality when temptation comes our way. Teach us to trust in You as you have shown us time and time again that with You (God), anything is possible.

My blog posts may be sporadic in the next few weeks - I'm apologizing in advance...I'm going to try my best to post every couple of days, but please understand I need to start packing up this family for our next adventure! The Power of Half

I picked up this book at the local library after becoming intrigued by the story I saw featured on the news. The Power of Half is the story about one family's decision to stop taking and start giving back. The idea was born when Hannah, then fourteen years old, witnessed a homeless man and another man driving an expensive vehicle in her neighborhood. She said to her father, "If that man had a less nice car, then the other man could have a meal." Quite a deep thought for a fourteen year old, I thought. The whole family got on board with Hannah's aha moment and decided to put their large home up for sale agreeing to donate half the profit to charity. I'm sure I'll finish the book in a day or two...it such a great thought philosophy to read about. For each copy of their book that is sold, $1 will be donated to Rebuilding Together, serving America's low-income homeowners and providing critical repairs at no charge to those with the greatest need. For their family project, they are investing in The Hunger Project. Visit their blog for more ideas for projects of your own. Kudos to the Salwen Family - what a great example!

After experiencing seven months of unemployment and living very frugally, we have been finally blessed with a job offer that will require yet another move. With this move, as with the last, my focus is to simplify. When you are forced to move, you realize how much 'stuff' you accumulate...and for what?!? To move it again? My goal is to sort and purge what we have and donate to those less fortunate. Once we are on our feet again, I am hoping to practice this same frugality we embraced through our months of unemployment. Live in excess no more. Give more of myself and more to charity, not necessarily money, but talent and service when and how I'm able. Lead by example as others learn by example. Develop an attitude of gratitude. Take nothing for granted. In the end, it's not how much you give; it's how much your giving changes your life and the lives of others.

So, to make a long story longer...I attended the Renegade Craft Fair Holiday Sale in Chicago last December and LOVED it. If you have a chance to get to a Renegade Craft Fair in a city where it's held, GO! It's soooo worth it. While there, I stopped at many a booth, picking up business cards and meeting wonderfully talented people. Sought out letterpress and found lots of it. Made a few purchases and enjoyed all the inspiration. One of those talented people was Michelle...let me introduce you to Elevated Press.

Here's a brief profile summary from Michelle's site: Elevated Press is a division of our design and production company, Elevated Works, founded in Chicago just below the El train.

Elevated press is a full-service letterpress stationery studio, printing original designs on cards for all occasions, wedding invitation suites, birth announcements, business stationery, and any other type of stationery that is desired in order to make a special impression. Custom orders are always welcome!

All of our stationery products are handmade on a Kelsey Excelsior or a Vandercook #3 letterpress. Letterpress gives a tactile quality to the print which makes it so appealing to look at as well as to touch. Due to the nature of letterpress printing, slight variations may occur in the prints... that's how you know it's handmade!

A few weeks after the show, I received an email from Michelle of Elevated Press announcing I was the winner of a set of their letterpress cards - my choice! I was elated!!! Ironically, hers was one of the business cards I had picked up...and I won from signing up on her mailing list. Awesome! I chose the Pair of Doves cards...they are so beautiful - the detail and color is exquisite. This is how gorgeous they are - I sent one out as a Thank You to someone and actually received a Thank You card back from that person for sending such a beautiful note (she ended up framing it)!

I love the heart hands card and have one of these, ready to be open framed for our family wall. It also seems like it's baby season around here (girls are outweighing the boys again), so I may have to pick up some more of their adorable pink 'Welcome Little One' cards pictured below. My Favorite Irishman

Today's post is in honor of my favorite Irishman who unfortunately passed away in late February as the result of an accidental fall. Father Michael O'Rourke (Father Mike) was Pastor at St. Mary Parish where we attended for years before recently moving away this past Fall. He was a wonderful friend and mentor, counseled us through many ups and downs, married me and my husband and baptized our daughter. He will forever hold a special place in our hearts and although he is no longer with us on this earth, we know we have gained a very special Guardian Angel in Heaven. Please take a minute to read a very special article about Father Mike and how he connected people together throughout the Valley area. You'll get a sense of how many people's lives he really did touch - over 1500 attended his funeral services and the local newspaper was kind enough to broadcast the services via internet to allow over 1700 people from multiple locations in the state, country and four continents watch it as well.

He always told us that Jesus was our best friend. No matter what happens, Jesus is there for us and loves us. One of my favorite stories he would share was the story about the lightbulb. He told this story to many of the children and it was a great analogy I plan to share with my daughter as I teach her about Jesus and our faith. Father Mike would take a regular old lightbulb and ask the children how he could turn it on. He would then stick it in his ear or under his arm...and look puzzled as to why it wasn't turning on. He would explain that we can't be a light to others or the light that Jesus wants us to be without being connected. Connected? Yes, connected...as he would then get an extension cord and add that to the lightbulb base...we need to be connected to Jesus Christ to let His light shine through us. What a great analogy...I can hear him telling it and see him acting it out.

He also would talk about the importance of the 'dash'. What is the dash, you ask? Father Mike said that your dash should not be about the material things you have in life like the house you live in or the type of car you drive...but what is important is what happens during your dash...meaning between the time you arrived on this earth to the time you leave. How will you fill your dash? How will others talk about your 'dash'? Another important and invaluable lesson I hope to teach my daughter by example. I can guarantee you, Father Mike's 'dash' will be remembered forever fondly by many, many people by how much he selflessly gave to his community and by the example of Christ he was to us.

I feel so very lucky and blessed to have had him in my life for so long, and I hope and pray that I can be an inspiration and light to others as he was to me. We all THANK YOU Father Mike for the blessings and inspiration you have shown us and given to us. We will miss you dearly! Happy St. Patrick's Day - celebrate the day in Heaven!!!

Do the Thing You Love...

Amen to that! So sorry that I've been out of the loop lately, but I've had good reason. I've been fighting this horrible headcold/cough/sinus infection for TWO WEEKS. I rarely get this sick - the last time I was this sick was over 3 1/2 years ago. Yikes. And it is going around unfortunately...many people I know have it or are just getting over it, the hubs and babe included. My mom went to the doctor today only to find out she has bronchitis and walking pneumonia...keep her in your thoughts for a speedy recovery. I'm going to plan on sneaking over there sometime tomorrow with a little care package for her (shhhh).

Anyway, now you know where I've been. The time off has allowed me to do some really deep soul searching and introspective research on our employment situation and how I could and/or should contribute to it. As most of you know, the hubs' job was cut last August and he has not found anything as of yet. Not that he hasn't been interviewing...he has and has been all over...but no luck (that's another post in itself). Anyway, we're quickly coming up on nine months of unemployment (May) which is the same amount of time to hatch a child...I'm just sayin' - it's a long time to be unemployed. It could be worse, but it could be better.

So, the past month or so we really visited the option of me going back to work full-time in the world of design. I've been freelancing for the most part since 2001 (my main focus right now is staying home with our daughter), so returning full-time in a corporate environment or organized company concerns me since it tended to burn me out in the past. I immerse myself and become (overly) passionate about design - meaning I eat, drink, sleep it. I literally become my job. With a husband and a daughter, balance is essential. With freelancing, I was able to control my involvement. I dislike being burned out (as we all do) especially when it is something I LOVE to do. So, I evaluated everything...pros, cons, options...I prayed about it, made lists, researched topics on the internet, made more lists, wrote ideas, talked to myself...you can do a lot when you're sick and no one else (rightfully) wants to be around you.

In the end, I made the decision to reprioritize my life...Faith, Family, Friends, Freelancing...in that order. My focus will be on my family and making our home life better and less stressful and chaotic. I want to be a better child of God. I want to be a better wife. I want to be a better mother. I want to be a better friend. I want to enjoy my design work, crafting and sewing projects, or however I decide to enjoy my creative outlet. I have no doubt in my mind that with this order I will be led to happiness and satisfaction I cannot fathom. Do what you LOVE and you'll LOVE what you do. Right now, I'm just happy to BE (a child of God, a daughter, a wife, a mother, a creative).

It all happened shortly after I joined Twitter which wasn't too long ago *blush* (hey I still haven't joined FB...yet...there's only so many hours in a day to get everything done). Anyway, I digress. Is this some joke? No. It's real. After jumping up and down wildly, I finally figured out what I was supposed to do, send her my mailing address and a few days later, this wonderful toy arrived at our house to an ecstatic three year old.

Seriously, this toy is such a great teaching tool and the pieces are attached together with Velcro, so when you cut it, it crunches and sounds like you're cutting a piece of fruit. Very.cool.

Open Heart Parenting

As a parent, you often wish there are published books telling you how you should parent and what you should do. Recently, I stumbled upon a book that was getting a lot of buzz. I ordered it, started reading it and am very pleased with it to date. Upon mentioning it to my sister, she told me about a poem she had heard a ways back and gave me the author's name and the poem title. I found it online and immediately felt inner peace. Serious inner peace...like I haven't felt in a very long time. Please read the poem below by Kahlil Gibran.

I now know my "true" purpose as a parent and welcome God's plan willingly. I will do my best to guide and nuture my child instilling a foundation of God's teachings, being a good role model and example, but allowing them to become exactly what God has intended them to be or do. This is an awesome message to parents, but you must have an open mind and open heart to embrace it. It's not an easy path, but trust in God - He does not lead you astray.

The book I have started reading that mirrors this mindset is Loving Our Kids on Purpose by Danny Silk. You can buy it here on Amazon if you are interested. I suggest if you must get ONE book on parenting, that this be the book - it's full of amazing information of how to teach your children to manage their freedom and choices all the while developing a respectful and trusting relationship with them. My daughter is only 3 years old, however, I would like to see if I can't implement some of these principles to instill in her the independence of making good choices for years to come.

Secret Shampoo = $AVING$!!!

For those of you who asked where I had been a week or so ago, I haven't fallen off the face of the earth. Well, not totally. I hope to be doing my posts on a regular basis...things have been so incredibly busy. Both my husband and I are actively looking for employment and add an active 3 year old into the mix of that equation and throw in a long Wisconsin winter...and the days seem to fly by with the blog taking backseat unfortunately. Why is it though, that when you are not working, every day seems like Saturday and you have no clue what date it is much less what day of the week it happens to be? Yeesh.

Since we are on a (very tight) budget, I thought I would start my "catch-up" marathon with a money saving post for my readers. I use and love a higher end salon line of shampoo and conditioners. However, with our recent financial 'adjustment', we are looking at everything we purchase to see if we can't get creative. Well, I was ecstatic - nothing short of doing cartwheels in the middle of the parking lot - after finding this new replacement hair care product...not sure if it is going to be temporary or permanent because I am liking it so much.

So here's the skinny. Most of you will be familiar with the SALLY Beauty Supply Stores...they have a line of product there that looks like (ironically similar packaging down to the bottle/cap color) and smells like and yes, even behaves like (if not better *gasp* did I say that?) the more expensive brand of shampoo. So, I purchased the shampoo and the mousse since I still had a huge bottle of conditioner to use up...and you know what, I am (very, very) pleasantly surprised. I may not be returning to the more expensive brand. I'll let you figure out what 'that brand' is...and let you figure out if you want to give the new one a try.

If you are interested, I've pictured the items I purchased below...it's not rocket science to figure out what brand I previously used and it surely didn't take rocket science to figure out how much money we could save by switching. I may end up getting their savings card as you get MORE money off your purchases by joining and it's well worth it if you plan on stocking your shelves with this secret shampoo - look like a million bucks for pennies!

To also save money, I gave myself a haircut in my bathroom...3 1/2 inches gone. Seriously, I feel about 10 pounds lighter and 5 years younger...for FREE. Can't beat that!

It's Snow Much Fun...

So we ended up with about 8 inches of snow from the past two days or so...nothing like the East Coast is experiencing, but enough for us to get out and enjoy it a bit. Winter doesn't seem as long when you remember the fun of freshly fallen snow with a 3 year old. Enjoy our little snippet.

Say Hello to My Little Friend...

...the Dirt Devil Swift Stick Vacuum. {Please know, I get no compensation or payment for doing this, but I must review this vac since it's been so handy!} I received this for Christmas this year and I am loving it for everyday little pickups. It's easy to use, lightweight, quick and not too noisy. The suction could be (a little) better; however, it picks up the crumbs my three year old tends to accumulate under/around/on her chair after meal times and that is what we wanted it for instead of lugging out the heavy-duty vacuum regularly. The on-board tool fit a bit looser than what was pictured on the box also. On the plus side, the vac was easy to assemble and very easy to clean. A lower button releases all your 'junk' into your garbage can and there are no filters to buy either (they do sell a replacement cartridge, but it's not one that you need to change out every few weeks like a regular vac bag/filter). The chamber and filter are very easy to clean once the dust builds up - regular cleaning does allow the vac to perform a bit better. So overall, I would have to say I give this little guy a B rating.

Mine was purchased for me at Bed, Bath and Beyond...remember, with their store coupons they run (20% off or $5 off a specific amount), you can save a little change. Be sure to read this VERY interesting post about the coupons - you won't be sorry! What's your favorite quick clean tool in your closet?

An Angel Among Us

Do you ever meet certain people you just know are positive to the core, they warm your soul and leave you with such happiness nothing could get you down? I had the pleasure of exactly this and want to share with you my experience with this Angel among us. She did the unnecessary and gave from her heart. I thank her every single day I look at her gift to me. She has true inner beauty and true selflessness...a great follow up to my previous post about 29 Gifts.

I entered a giveaway (as I do many) on this fabulous blog awhile back (one of my favorites). Shortly after leaving my comment, I received an email from this Angel stating she read my comment and her heart felt for our situation. {If you're new to my blog, long story short - hubs corporate job got cut back in July and he's still looking, so we don't have much disposable income and are living the most frugal ever - it could be worse, but it could be better.} Anyway, she sent us her beautiful photo of Greece (as I had mentioned in my giveaway comment that visiting there was on my bucket list but unattainable in the near future due to the previously mentioned circumstances) and she wanted us to put it up in our house to remind us to stay motivated and positive every day. I was so shocked, I started crying. As we all know, 'blogland' brings its good and bad characters; however, I must say, this was the most generous gesture I had personally experienced.

Her photo is a reminder of that and I thank her a million times over...as she stated in her email, "The purpose of art is to inspire and it did just that, I'm grateful that there are still people like you that keep their hearts open."

She is an Angel among us and I'm glad she decided to touch our lives that day. Thank you Mina. You lifted our spirits that day and continue to do so through the inspiration of your photograph of Greece. 29-Day Giving Challenge

Alright my friends - you all know I love to read and I just inhaled this book, 29 Gifts: How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life by Cami Walker. This book was excellent and a Christmas present from the hubs (thanks sweetie) - I read a little each night and finished it in under five days. I became inspired by the author, her life and her trials and triumphs along the way. She has reintroduced the idea of altruistic giving and the true act of selflessness. She helped me identify that I should try to mindfully give and focus more on the act itself.

Personally, I am a random act of kindness person; I prefer to give behind the scenes and catch someone by surprise much more than be recognized about doing it...neither is wrong, it's a personal preference...hey, at least you're giving of yourself. When I do come face to face with someone or interact after my act, I do try to say just 'pay it forward' after they have thanked me. What a wonderful place the world would be if everyone just practiced that selfless act of giving of themselves.

Sunday Morning Frosty Treat

This past Sunday morning, we were treated to a rare delight of Hoar Frost. There are different types of hoar frost, this one being specifically air hoar. Air hoar is a deposit of hoar frost on objects above the surface, such as tree branches, plant stems, wires and the sort. Hoar frost happens when fog forms and then temperatures drop below freezing. The water-saturated air cools as it touches solid objects resulting in delicate white ice crystals.

Our (almost) three year old quickly informed us that Jesus painted the trees. Upon entering the church parking lot, she yelled out a very sincere thank you stating, 'Thank you Jesus for paintin' the trees - they're BOOO-Tiful!' Now, that's enough to warm your heart, but not enough to warm the frost off these trees before I was able to snap some photos.

Happy Birthday Grandma!!!

So, today was my Grandma's birthday...my only living grandparent. How old is she you ask? Well, she's 98. Yup. And get this...she still lives alone, bakes every week and has a mind that is as sharp as a tack. Today we went to visit Grandma and spent some time with her - it was great! We brought her some flowers and a card and thoroughly enjoyed our time with her.

I feel very blessed that my daughter (her great-granddaughter) is able to know her and interact with her. Together, their ages are over 100 years - a century of experience between the two of them :) Can you imagine what someone 98 years old has lived through in a lifetime? My grandmother immigrated here at a young age and her mother passed away early leaving her to help raise the family.

Oh the stories we have heard - she is one tough cookie! Stories I plan to pass down to my daughter as we page through the photos in our albums. Tomorrow, be sure to spend some time with an elderly relative that you may not have seen in quite some time. I'm sure they will enjoy the visit and as they say, there's no time like the present.

Odd Resemblances That Make You Go Hmm...

So, I'm sitting in my office and I look up at the Pates Baroni picture hanging on the wall. I'm a big fan of Leonetto Cappiello and have a ton of his advertising posters in some shape or capacity through my home, but especially in my office. I get a strange feeling like I know the person with that plate of spaghetti...and then it dawns on me! I ask the hubs the question if he/she looks familiar? I then proceed to state how the character resembles Drew Barrymore, in my opinion. Don't believe me? Check out a poster image where you can see the face. There is just something about the face, especially the eyes and mouth. Check it out for yourself...we have consensus here. What do YOU think?

Looking for a New Beat?

I just updated my mixpod playlist with some ear candy. I don't have it set to play automatically (but it does loop once you do hit play), because there's nothing worse than finding a blog and having music come out of nowhere when the page loads only to frantically scroll to see where the stop button is. (You know what I'm talkin' about...I was guilty of this until I read it is the #1 annoying no-no that bloggers do). This usually happens to me when I am surfing at 2am next to my daughter's bedroom. Sometimes I can't scroll fast enough to find that button or close the window!

I am exhausted and overwhelmed. What have I been doing? I decided to catch up on the news this afternoon. Sobs. Full.body.sobs for these people. They need our help. I feel such a demand and a need to help those in Haiti - looking at the pictures and hearing the reports - I am just sick. Every little bit helps. We are on such a tight budget with no employment, but I wrote down the Red Cross phone numbers to donate tonight. I MUST.

Things you can do if you are financially strapped like many others...PRAY, PRAY, PRAY. NEVER underestimate the POWER OF PRAYER. If you can give your time, either here or there - do it! Get the word out - blog, email, tweet about all the assistance options to help these people. You can help. Here are some options, but you can just google 'Help Haiti' or 'Haiti' and a million resources will pop up on your screen and you can choose.

I got an email awhile back that I have been wanting to share with you regarding the amazing results of people taking the time to participate in the GAP Give and Get annual program. A certain percentage of your purchases goes toward a charity of your choice. We purchased some basic items that we needed and felt good that a certain portion was going to the charity we chose. I can proudly say that I contributed from my purchase to Feeding America; a lot of my friends participated as well - the results are posted below. A little bit goes a long way and every little bit counts - over $2 million dollars were raised total for the charities listed both in the US and Canada, with just over $450K going to Feeding America. This has got to be the CUTEST commercial E-V-E-R! Well, it's my favorite of the moment right now. The reason, you ask? My 2 1/2 year old will drop everything, yes, I mean everything...toys, M&Ms, ice cream, etc (Santa could be in the room)...and RUN...literally RUN to the TV and as they say, get into formation (you cheerleaders know what I'm talking about). Anyway, she sings, dances and grooves right along with the girls having a complete blast (picture perma-grin and wide eyes) and she knows a lot of the words, especially HOW CUTE ARE THESE BOOTS?!

After it is done, she turns to me and says, "Mommy, I want to do that." And I tell her she just did. And she states, "No. On TV." Every time it comes on, you swear it's the first time she has seen it as her reaction is more excited each time it airs.

The Six Minute Logo Challenge...

...may be a bore to some of you; however, being in the world of design, logo identification is a MUST. If a logo is easy to remember, it's a winner and well designed. Do you have just six minutes? I double dog dare you. My results, you ask? I happily got 33 out of 36. The three I missed, I doubt I would have gotten with another six minutes to think about it.

International readers may have a bit of a challenge as they are US logos...but you may surprise yourself too! If you can't spell the name, just sound it out...you have six minutes. And no cheating ;) Have fun with it. And once you've mastered this quiz, go on to the next one - it's a bit more difficult (you do get a bit more time). Have fun!

Kudos to the folks that put this safety pictorial out for the holidays (I was lucky enough to catch this on the Chicago news tonight and wanted to share it with you)...please, take the time to download it especially if you have any children in your home either as your own or as visitors. The guide highlights all the recalled items (toys, furniture, clothing, etc.) from the past year.

Reminder: make sure if you shop second hand stores or online sites like ebay or craigslist, that you are cross-referencing this handy list to ensure you are not purchasing any recalled items. All retailers, both large and small, are *supposed* to be adhering to the recall notices and pulling the items from their shelves. However, online policing of these items is much more difficult which means individual consumers much be more diligent with arming themselves with vital safety information. You can also sign up to receive recall information via email at the CPSC site here. You are able to specify or filter what categories from which you receive information.

Educate yourselves and your loved ones - happy shopping and be sure to look through your current belongings to ensure safety is met! DOWNLOAD your own guide HERE!!

Twilight or New Moon?

We just watched Twilight the other week - I know, way late, right?! However, it's perfect timing as I am looking forward to seeing the next movie in the Twilight Saga - New Moon...hoping it's better than the first. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Twilight, but parts of it were not as expected. Some parts dragged out, but boy did they get that high school awkwardness right (painfully awkward to watch) - I felt like I was back in the late 80's/early 90's (now I've dated myself, great...). I've heard and read reviews that the second movie does not disappoint, but we will be the judge...tomorrow. We're hoping to sneak in a matinee and enjoy it firsthand.

Jane of the Jungle

So, I was a Jane the other weekend. Yup. I hosted my first Matilda Jane party and LOVED it. I had a fabulous trunk keeper come to my house with all her goodies and wowed my guests with her adorable wardrobe and accessory options. And trust me, there are a ton of them! Here are some samples of what my Gabrielle will soon have in her closet...she has a better wardrobe than I do! But that is OK - things seem to look so much cuter on her...and Matilda Jane fabrics and construction are unmatched - there are a lot of copy-cats out there or look alikes to this brand, but they just do not compare. Their knit fabric is so incredibly soft and Denise picks the BEST fabric combinations - every line that is released coordinates with the previous or next - it's great!

Long time, no see...we're back!

Where does the time go? Well, last you heard we were packing up, had sold our house and moved. We are settling in...but not too much as we're unsure of whether or not we'll have to move because of a job offer. There are a few things in the works, some local or close where we would not need to move in the short term...and some are quite distant (out-of-state) to where it would behoove us NOT to unpack the non-essentials for every day living. So, we wait. And wait. And wait. Hoping some news will arrive much sooner than later...but for now, here is where we are holding camp. We love our Craftsman bungalow home and we are so blessed to have the world's best friends (old and new) - especially the builders who are renting this beauty of a model home to us. It is wonderful to be so close to family again and in familiar territory - we're sure going to enjoy it while it lasts. Updates to come once we hear more, I promise!
