GIVEAWAY day is here!

So did you guess the giveaway item from the previous hints? One winner will win their own copy of Pottery Barn's Storage & Display hardcover book (a $24.95 retail value) for their personal library!!!

After our multiple moves in a few short months, it forced us to become uber organized people (and I am over the top organized to begin with). We have gotten to the point of color coding our boxes per floor plan and labeling them very specifically so there is no confusion. We can only hope our next movers follow our technique. Long story for another day. *sigh* As they say, the best laid plans...anyway, once we got the boxes in the correct locations here, the fun part started. The unpacking, deciding what to keep, what to put out in the room and what to give away. New and different spaces need new and different strategies. No room is exactly the same, so it's like starting from scratch with a blank slate and all your belongings tend to take on a new feel. Pure excitement! Well, at least for me. So I am asking my readers to answer one question for me to be entered in this giveaway.

What is your all time favorite organizational tip?
It can be for a room, a house, a closet, a move...think about it and let me know by leaving me a comment.

One winner will receive a brand new hardcover copy of Pottery Barn's Storage & Display - Stylish Solutions for Organizing Your Home!
This book is absolutely fabulous - I have one in my home library I reference all the time!

To enter, please leave your best or favorite organizational tip along with your name (first name and last initial). Entries without a tip will be disqualified. You can enter once a day with a new organizational tip.

To earn an extra (optional) entry, become a follower in Google Friend Connect (lefthand column - click the Follow button) and leave me a comment that you did so.

Giveaway will run through 11:59 p.m. CST on Thursday, July 22nd, 2010. One winner will be selected from total comments at contest end via random.org and announced sometime on Friday, July 23rd. Giveaway is open to U.S. residents at this time only.

Thanks for participating and good luck!

Label everything! It makes it so much easier to find stuff.

I too am a basket junkie. To hide magazine subscriptions that we just can't part with yet, I stack in big baskets and push under my end tables.

Make LISTS! :) I am going through a move RIGHT NOW and it is helping me so much! I have a calendar with lists, a piece of paper with lists... it's just the best idea I can give. Oh, and have a really good sharpie in the house ;)

Old jelly jars/mason jars make cute and handy displays for odds and ends like buttons, rubber bands, and twist ties.

I love using baskets with labels on for closets. It allows things to remain in easy reach, but without everything being visible all the time.

I fold and place the kids laundry on top of the washer/dryer and have a small basket for each of them for socks, so that they don't end up behind the washer/dryer. :0)

"A place for everything, and everything in its place"--the truth of this is coming home to me, as we're in a new house, and don't know what each thing's place is--makes it hard to tidy up!

Not an organizational comment, but a cleaning one: if it takes less than a minute, do it now and then all the little tasks won't build up.

I know it's an old one, but it's old for a reason-it works: when cleaning out closets, if you haven't worn it in the last 6 months or in the last season it was appropriate for, get rid of it!

My best tip is to, at random times, go around the house with my denim tote bag and pick up everything that is not in its "home." Then I sort through the bag and put everything where it's supposed to be. It doesn't necessarily stay there, but at least everything is clean for a few minutes :)

My favorite tip: keep a pretty bowl near the front door as a catch all for small items like keys, wallet, cell phone, library card etc. That way you don't lose them and they don't look messy cluttering up the place.

I bought about 25 white photo boxes from Michaels. The best organizational purchase of my life!!. They are easy to label and stack and fit perfectly on any shelf. I have one for pens, scissors, cards, tape/glue, etc. Anything you can think of. They are my favorite.

Thanks,
Emily T.

I wish I had a tip. That's why I need this book! My best tip is to try to keep from getting overwhelmed (which happens to me a lot!) by doing it in small increments. Concentrate on one small area for 15 minutes. Then either continue for another 15 minutes, or work on it another day. *sigh*

You can never have too many small bins to seperate childrens toys into. Never. It helps them group so they can put toys away on their own around age 3.

I use pretty baskets in the bathroom to store all my "girl" products. It's an easy way to keep the bathroom looking clean, organized, and pulled together.

My biggest secret to organization are decorative storage baskets and boxes. You can hide all sorts of clutter in a pinch. omydarlingblog(at)gmail(dot)com

Another tip for today:
Fold your shirts, shorts and jeans in half and stand them up in the drawer. That way you can see what you have and choose the one you want without digging through a pile.

I like all kinds of boxes... metallic, wooden or painted boxes, big or small boxes : they hide everything : jewels, spices, photos, socks...

Lynn said...

Another tip for today:
To maximize closet space, add another shelf above the existing top shelf, make use of the door with an over-the-door shoe rack or hooks, and move out of season clothing into bins under your bed.

BINS! We love bins in our house. Plastic bins, fabric storage bins, whatever...they are great for holding little things...like random toys from Happy Meals and bouncy balls, fabric scraps, crafty randomness, etc

I have too many wonderful purses to let them get squished up in the back of my closet, so I like to display them by hanging them on individual hooks on one wall of my room. That way I get to look at them, and I can easily grab one for a quick purse change!
