GAP Give and Get Results

I got an email awhile back that I have been wanting to share with you regarding the amazing results of people taking the time to participate in the GAP Give and Get annual program. A certain percentage of your purchases goes toward a charity of your choice. We purchased some basic items that we needed and felt good that a certain portion was going to the charity we chose. I can proudly say that I contributed from my purchase to Feeding America; a lot of my friends participated as well - the results are posted below. A little bit goes a long way and every little bit counts - over $2 million dollars were raised total for the charities listed both in the US and Canada, with just over $450K going to Feeding America. A job well done - THANK YOU participants!

Happy Christmas Eve!

Just wanted to share a little something the hubs (yes, the hubs did this) put together while I was out running errands the other day. Got home and surprise - I'm a dancing elf. Who knew?! It's a fun thing to do and even funnier to watch. Guaranteed laughs for sure. Enjoy the clip :)

Now, are you going to go Elf Yourself? It's quick and easy to do - go here to create your own. We hope you are enjoying the holiday season as we prepare for the birth of our Lord.

Talk to the Moose

This has got to be the CUTEST commercial E-V-E-R! Well, it's my favorite of the moment right now. The reason, you ask? My 2 1/2 year old will drop everything, yes, I mean everything...toys, M&Ms, ice cream, etc (Santa could be in the room)...and RUN...literally RUN to the TV and as they say, get into formation (you cheerleaders know what I'm talking about). Anyway, she sings, dances and grooves right along with the girls having a complete blast (picture perma-grin and wide eyes) and she knows a lot of the words, especially HOW CUTE ARE THESE BOOTS?!

After it is done, she turns to me and says, "Mommy, I want to do that." And I tell her she just did. And she states, "No. On TV." Every time it comes on, you swear it's the first time she has seen it as her reaction is more excited each time it airs.

For your viewing pleasure, I present to you the GAP Holiday Commercial "Talk to the Moose". Enjoy! I'm off to write Hollywood a letter about the arrival of my performing drama queen :) And I'm warning you, it's catchy! I caught myself chanting it while doing laundry today (*blush*).

Great Group Gift Exchange Ideas

So, if you are exchanging gifts with a group of friends or coworkers this year, you may just want to consider this 5 pack of Envirosax reusable bags. They're stylish enough to carry them proudly at the store, to the gym or the library and take up little to no space in your desk drawer or glove compartment. Individually they end up costing less than $8 per bag! Throw some little goodies in there and voila, an instant gift with its own reusable wrapping.

And the little goodies could easily be:

From E.L.F. cosmetics, these delicious little lip gloss tins come in tasty, lip-smacking flavors and are sooo incredibly affordable at only $2.00 per tin. Stock up for yourself and everyone's stockings! I'm sure you'll find some other goodies on their site as well - everything is reasonably priced, ALL the time!

Little matchbook notepads, found on etsy.com here and here. At these prices, you can't go wrong and you'll never be without a piece of paper on which to jot a note.

These midnight blue scalloped lace beauties are just calling to me! At this price point, you can have every color under the rainbow and not go broke. She's running a buy three (3), get one (1) free sale right now too!

Beautiful flower adorned hairpins - buy a few different sets and hand them out individually to your friends, one for their favorite color. Attach them to a little letterpress note card that you can find here (the bird is my ABSOLUTE favorite) or here or here.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

To those who are celebrating today - enjoy the day! GIVE THANKS for everything you have, big and small.

Today, I am thankful for:
• My faith
• My family
• My friends, near and far
• My freedom
• My health
• A roof over my head
• The lessons my 2 year old continues to teach me (patience, forgiveness, understanding, gratitude, happiness...)
• The delight of a surprise snowfall and the genuine delight of a 2 year old seeing it fall from the heavens
• Food on my table
• Opportunities abound

We must learn to never take anything for granted. Each and every day, take a few minutes both morning and night, to say thanks to God - with Him all things are possible.

The Six Minute Logo Challenge...

...may be a bore to some of you; however, being in the world of design, logo identification is a MUST. If a logo is easy to remember, it's a winner and well designed. Do you have just six minutes? I double dog dare you. My results, you ask? I happily got 33 out of 36. The three I missed, I doubt I would have gotten with another six minutes to think about it.

International readers may have a bit of a challenge as they are US logos...but you may surprise yourself too! If you can't spell the name, just sound it out...you have six minutes. And no cheating ;) Have fun with it. And once you've mastered this quiz, go on to the next one - it's a bit more difficult (you do get a bit more time). Have fun!

Home SAFE Home

(click on image to download guide)

Kudos to the folks that put this safety pictorial out for the holidays (I was lucky enough to catch this on the Chicago news tonight and wanted to share it with you)...please, take the time to download it especially if you have any children in your home either as your own or as visitors. The guide highlights all the recalled items (toys, furniture, clothing, etc.) from the past year.

Reminder: make sure if you shop second hand stores or online sites like ebay or craigslist, that you are cross-referencing this handy list to ensure you are not purchasing any recalled items. All retailers, both large and small, are *supposed* to be adhering to the recall notices and pulling the items from their shelves. However, online policing of these items is much more difficult which means individual consumers much be more diligent with arming themselves with vital safety information. You can also sign up to receive recall information via email at the CPSC site here. You are able to specify or filter what categories from which you receive information.

Educate yourselves and your loved ones - happy shopping and be sure to look through your current belongings to ensure safety is met! DOWNLOAD your own guide HERE!!

Friends Don't Let Friends Pay Retail

Seriously...here is another fantabulous site for you to visit - Haute Look. It is similar to the site where I got my Orla Kiely bag for dirt cheap...so check it out! You can join for free and browse as you wish...they list their sales, current and coming, so you're always informed. Plus the timing couldn't be better - hit the sales before Black Friday comes and goes...all from your chair at home in your pjs...no long lines, no elbow bumping, no thumb-wrestling for the last Tickle Me Elmo (does that happen?)...anyway, you get the idea.

Don't waste any more time - they have great sales going on like COACH and Plan Toys right now! Check it out at Haute Look and never pay retail again!

Twilight or New Moon?

We just watched Twilight the other week - I know, way late, right?! However, it's perfect timing as I am looking forward to seeing the next movie in the Twilight Saga - New Moon...hoping it's better than the first. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Twilight, but parts of it were not as expected. Some parts dragged out, but boy did they get that high school awkwardness right (painfully awkward to watch) - I felt like I was back in the late 80's/early 90's (now I've dated myself, great...). I've heard and read reviews that the second movie does not disappoint, but we will be the judge...tomorrow. We're hoping to sneak in a matinee and enjoy it firsthand.

Can't get enough of Bella or Edward or the rest of the vamp gang? Download some cool desktop wallpapers here and enjoy their presence eternally.

Have you seen it already? Did you like it? How did it rate to the first one? And here's the big question...are you Team Jacob or Team Edward? Inquiring minds want to know...cast your vote for fun in our poll found in our righthand sidebar.

Santa Stopped Really Early...or Orla Kiely?

Whatever way you say it, Santa got a deal! Remember my post Wonderful Weekend Wardrobe? Do you see the awesome Orla Kiely cross-hatch stem large tote in my style board? After weeks and weeks of searching for a price that wouldn't break our bank, my persistence has paid off and I scored this exceptional tote for 60% off retail pricing - yes, you heard me right...it's a tad over $100 OFF the retail price. An extra benjamin in the bank is never a bad thing...no sir. I about fell off my chair and had to refresh my screen a few times to ensure I wasn't wishfully daydreaming. I wasn't. Here is my beauty that should be arriving via UPS in the very near future. Look out UPS man - you may just get a hug out of this delivery :)

Are you wondering how I was able to snag such a deal? Well, keep reading. I joined the Gilt Groupe; it's free to become a member and most of their sales are up to 70% off brand name and designer goods. From my Orla story, you can believe what I'm saying! So hurry and click on the link to join and become a member. You'll be glad you did and so will your wallet. Enjoy some Gilt (free) shopping like me!!!

GAP Give and Get = Shopping Karma

I absolutely LOVE this promo - it's a great idea and I participate in it every year. GAP offers a Give and Get coupon - 30% off of anything for 4 days - with 5% going to the charity of YOUR choice (they have a group you get to pick from and they are all worthy charities). You can send an invite to participate to 25 of your friends - if they buy, 5% of their purchase will be donated to that charity of your choice. Although 5% isn't a ton, there is a domino effect going on here and as they say, every little bit adds up.

I urge you to participate in this when it rolls around next time - keep your eyes peeled. Here's a sampling for what I got for just about $60 with the 30% OFF! Three basic layering shirts for me (came to $8.75 for the Favorite tees and $10.50 for the gray super soft tee), uber cute legwarmers for Miss Gabi (hello, $7!) and some new cologne for the hubs (under $20). Right now, they have an online special running through November 22nd. Get 25% off your entire purchase (regularly priced items only) by entering GIFT123 at checkout (some exclusions apply - check the website for full details).

Jane of the Jungle

So, I was a Jane the other weekend. Yup. I hosted my first Matilda Jane party and LOVED it. I had a fabulous trunk keeper come to my house with all her goodies and wowed my guests with her adorable wardrobe and accessory options. And trust me, there are a ton of them! Here are some samples of what my Gabrielle will soon have in her closet...she has a better wardrobe than I do! But that is OK - things seem to look so much cuter on her...and Matilda Jane fabrics and construction are unmatched - there are a lot of copy-cats out there or look alikes to this brand, but they just do not compare. Their knit fabric is so incredibly soft and Denise picks the BEST fabric combinations - every line that is released coordinates with the previous or next - it's great!

So check it out!!! But I'm warning you - if you've never been exposed to Matilda Jane, it's a life changing experience...I'm addicted to them! Either you love them or you hate them...I happen to be in the love them, love them, love them group...so here's some eye candy of our newest additions. Have fun!

Long time, no see...we're back!

Where does the time go? Well, last you heard we were packing up, had sold our house and moved. We are settling in...but not too much as we're unsure of whether or not we'll have to move because of a job offer. There are a few things in the works, some local or close where we would not need to move in the short term...and some are quite distant (out-of-state) to where it would behoove us NOT to unpack the non-essentials for every day living. So, we wait. And wait. And wait. Hoping some news will arrive much sooner than later...but for now, here is where we are holding camp. We love our Craftsman bungalow home and we are so blessed to have the world's best friends (old and new) - especially the builders who are renting this beauty of a model home to us. It is wonderful to be so close to family again and in familiar territory - we're sure going to enjoy it while it lasts. Updates to come once we hear more, I promise!

Happy 5th Anniversary Sweetie

Sorry I'm a week late with this post, but we've been a bit busy (ahem)...moving sale, finding jobs, packing, updates...sleep? No sleep. Oh and an active 2 year old...who likes to go parkin' (slides, swings, etc.) every day. Phew. I'm tired just typing it.

H A P P Y ::: 5th ::: A N N I V E R S A R Y

Thank you for the great past five years - we've been through a lot together - and you've always found a way to make me laugh. You are my evil twin and I am your stunt double. I love finishing your sentences and know that you are thinking exactly what is in my head. Life is a journey and I'm so happy I have a partner like you. Our greatest creation together so far is our daughter - I'm so proud of the father you are and the best friend you continue to be. Looking forward to our adventure together as a family and as a couple...I wouldn't want to give it a go with anyone else but you (and our darling daughter)...I love you always and forever.

On that note, I put together a little styleboard of an outfit appropriate for a wonderful night out to celebrate our wedded bliss - it's easy on the eyes and also on the checkbook. The links below are where all the lovelies can be purchased (for those interested readers or for a hubby looking for ideas - wink, wink). There are a few options for jewelry just because I couldn't decide on just one - they are all so delish!

Holy Niners...

So - it's 09-09-09...what will you be doing at 09:09:09? Take a picture! Buy a lottery ticket. Post something on your blog. Kiss a loved one. Say a prayer. Smile. Whatever you do, make it fun and document it. Maybe you're getting married tomorrow and a long, happy marriage is in your future (see point #4 below)...

Fun facts about 09-09-09 (insert weird X-Files music here...):

September 9th is the 252nd day of the year (2 + 5 +2) equals 9
• The day falls on a Wednesday and Wednesday & September have 9 letters each
09-09-09 is also the last of the single-digit dates for quite a while (92 years to be precise)
The Chinese meaning of the number nine is longevity

Whatever you may be doing tomorrow, no matter the time, may you have many blessings and enjoy the day!

It's in the BAG (giveaway)

Ahhh...back to school sales - the composition notebooks, the fun pencils, markers...and - the choice of the backpack. Well, I've stumbled upon what may be the best backpack site for fun choices yet - GROSGRAIN is hosting a giveaway for one of these little lovelies - check it out below!

Made by Rae Jackpack Backpack GUEST GIVEAWAY!!!!

My 2 year old daughter is SOOO into Mickey and the Beanstalk that this bag - the Jackpack - would be her present from the long awaited arrival of Santa - how great would that be?!

Once you're done checking out Kathleen's posts at Grosgrain, swing by Made by Rae and check out her crafting goodies.

Martha and George (x2) - sigh

Martha (Stewart) and two George (Washingtons), that is. Read on and then RUN, don't walk to your Big Lots store. Yes, you heard me correctly. Big Lots. For what, you ask? Well, two weeks ago I stumbled upon some very nice clearance items at our local Big Lots. MARTHA STEWART craft packages - all of her discontinued styles were nicely hung on two endcaps that literally called to me as we entered the store. What were we there for? I don't even remember I was so ecstatic after finding these...I think we were there for something to do with the moving sale or moving in general. It's all a blur after I found these...

But, I digress. I picked up a few of the awesome pink pom-pom kits that have been featured on blogs everywhere like here and here. And some really nice 'rainy day projects' making puppets and jewelry...some flower kits - you can never have too many of these. Prepackaged with the MS brand, makes for great last minute gifts for kids or hostess gifts.

And here's the stickler...all the kits are priced at only $2 each. Yup, you heard me right again. Two bucks a piece - two George Washingtons! Some are 90% off (oh the money you save!) Oh Martha...I've got my work cut out for me once we're settled at the new house...I will welcome winter and all the crafting I will be up to :) Check out this week's ad here. Like I said, RUN, don't walk - they won't last long at this price!!!

George and Martha were definitely made for each other this time around.

SOLD! SOLD! SOLD!

We cannot believe it. The house has sold in 8 days. We accepted an offer yesterday and are elated! We had multiple parties interested with a possible secondary offer to our accepted offer and a crazy, chaotic day of showing the house from morning through evening. We have mixed feelings to be leaving our home, but are soooo excited about what the future holds and our new adventure of where we may end up. Thank you to all for the wonderfully supportive emails and all the prayers - they sure did help! Eight days in today's housing market is more than we could ever expect - plus the offer was a full price offer, so we are truly blessed.

Here's the slideshow of the property again:

Now all we need to do is find a job for the hubs. And I'm not opposed to finding a job again too - we just have to line up care for our daughter during the day. Who knows, maybe I have a future back in real estate or staging (or a combo of the two)!?! I'll be keeping you updated on any new developments - again, thanks for all the support!

Hello Strangers! Where in the World Have We Been?!?

Well, some of you have emailed me since I haven't posted in quite some time...and I wanted to give you an update on what has been going on behind the scenes here. All is well (thanks for the concerns), but quite busy. At the end of July, my husband's company identified positions they were eliminating with their corporate restructure and unfortunately, his position was one of them. It is sad - I know so many people, many with families, that are in the same situation that we are now in.

Soooo, in addition to looking for new employment, we have decided to put our house up for sale so we can easily relocate to wherever we find new employment. It's been a little crazy trying to get a house prepped to show in two weeks...with a very active toddler. The sign went up in the yard today and the listing is online locally here, so it is OFFICIAL. Yikes. Talk about mixed feelings and emotions. At the same time we are sad to be packing up and moving from our house here that we love, love, love, we are very excited as to the new journey we now will begin in pursuit of finding our next home and work.

If you know of anyone who is interested in a very well-maintained character home that is 2.5 blocks from a wonderful park (lots of gorgeous mature trees, outdoor heated pools, lighted tennis courts, tons of kids gym equipment and outdoor pavilions), please let me know and I can send you more information. The photos of our house can be found to the right on the moving slide presentation. Feel free to take a peek and leave us a comment in this post- we would love to hear from you!

Lastly, if any of you know of a position for a Marketing Communications professional (5-10 years experience) with project and product management experience in a CPG (consumer packaged goods) or creative environment (the hubs also has graphic design skills) - PLEASE email me or leave a comment (seriously) - we are open to relocating within the US. Thanks so much!

Hopefully I'll be able to keep a semi-regular blogging schedule, but I'm not making any promises...I forgot how much work it is to prep a house, prepare for a move and still have a somewhat normal life with a family - yikes! Wish us luck!

Super Star Saturdays

What's in a name? Well, I decided to start up a SATURDAY EVENING POST featuring stars since my last name means star in German. I'm hoping to find some every day inspirations to share with you and because there are three of us in our 'star' family, there will be three images (hopefully) that I will share for you...one for papa bear, one for mama bear and one for baby bear. I'm hoping I can keep up my end of the bargain...you have to start somewhere, right?

Today's features are all from etsy.com:

What's YOUR Style Personality?

Find out here! I stumbled upon this fun little quiz (originally posted on How about orange...) that you can take at the International School of Colour and Design (Australia) site to identify your style personality. Answer a few fun questions and pouf!...you get your results. Mine were pretty true - here's my results from taking the quiz:

(images courtesy of ISCD)

A Midsummer (Afternoon) Performance

I attended a ballet performance this afternoon. Really. In my own living room. Best seats in the house and I was able to interview the aspiring ballerina in person at the conclusion of her show. You can watch a snippet from the performance below - just click play in the window. I hear the next show is sold out (wink, wink), but I'm sure she'll perform for you any time, any where. Seriously...she loves performing.

Our house is filled with 'bella bella ballerina' (as quoted from our daughter) performances comprised of a plethora of twirls, leaps and claps and a wardrobe consisting of a tutu, princess shoes and a crown. We were sans crown today as one of the jewels was being 'repaired' (it takes a beating being worn every day, ya know). Long live princesses and ballerinas - I have a feeling this phase will be around for awhile. Sit back and enjoy the show!

SALE ::: SALE ::: SALE

I am having a BOGO 1/2 off sale at my destash etsy site, Supply & Demand...buy one book, get one half off! (Please see my shop announcements for all details.) Most of the books are already dirt cheap, so what are you waiting for?!? The sale starts today and I'm not sure how long I'm going to have it run.

These books really need to find a good home - either for new people to read or feel free to enjoy them for your crafting needs. I have an awesome Paris book listed that has gorgeous photography - use some of the images in frames you already have around the house and voila, new artwork from your book travels. Or better yet, make some awesome cards or collages with the imagery. It's breathtaking! I hate to cut apart books, but it's better than just sitting on the shelves collecting dust. We have so many books and I like to rotate them out regularly so they are new to other people.

So check out the sale - I will be adding more items to the store this week. Some items to come are back issues (tons of them) in groupings of 2 or 3 for dirt cheap again - examples you will find are TONS (and I mean TONS) of home decorating magazines (both US and UK issues) and lots of graphic design (HOW, Print, ID...). So bookmark my etsy shop and check back (very) frequently - I would hate for you to miss out on some rare and unique opportunities...it's Christmas in July here and here...

Today's post was brought to you by the letters A, B and C...

and the rest of the alphabet gang with a follow up of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star (did you know they are the same melody?) YUP - the SAME! I never realized it until I had to sing both back-to-back-to-back-to-back...well, you get the picture. Our two-year old daughter loves the camera so was frustrated at the end when the song was done (hence the protest)...she would love for our life to be a musical with singing and dancing all the time. Could you imagine? Better yet, could you imagine what our neighbors would think? Oh boy - I laugh at the visual of this as will my good friends and family that read this and know me all too well.

A Summer Staple

I've been wanting to post this recipe given to me by my mom (thanks Mom) because it is all I seem to be living on this past spring and summer...OH is it delish! The recipe is for a quick and super easy (did I mention delicious) oil and vinegar dressing that is to.die.for on a spinach salad. YUM! I bet you could whip some up tomorrow with items you have in your fridge or pantry - give it a try and let me know what you think!

If you're wondering where I got the cute recipe cards so appropriate for summer, you can find them here. Erin (Vale Design) is a very talented and generous graphic designer who posts lots of freebie downloads (for non-commerical use please - read her common sense rules), so run on over while you're eating your savory dressing on your spinach salad and visit her blog, Leo on the Loose. Stay awhile and check out some of her posts - tell her I sent you over for some post salad eye candy.

Click on the image below to download a PDF file of the recipe card.

It's HEEEE-REE!

I received my lovely package via air post today containing the wonderful chalkboard hoop I won from Bliss In a Teacup when they were featured on Danni's blog, Oh, Hello Friend. I am so excited to hang it and use it! I'm afraid my little photo collage doesn't really do it justice. I shot them in a hurry mid-afternoon after it had arrived and wanted to include all the packaging details from the wonderful handwritten note to the cute little pin on her business card and fabric wrapped chalk.

I wonder where I should hang it? Perhaps in my studio upstairs. I have PLENTY to do up there where I would need a to-do list...and a fashionable one at that! One wall in my studio is actually all chalkboard (I have yet to write on it - the clean black just looks so nice!) and part of the chalkboard wall is actually magnetic. I'll try to post some pics of my studio when I have the chance.

Thanks again Becka for your generous giveaway and also many thanks to Danni for all the fantabulous giveaways she hosts on her blog. Be sure to check out both of these talented peeps.

Educational and Cute!

How can you resist? This alphabet poster from print, pattern, paper comes in two sizes and is both educational for your itty-bitty and cute as a button for your walls. Reasonably priced (11 x 14" is $32.00 and 18 x 24" is $42.00), I may just have to order one for my daughter. The world map poster would be great on the wall of a playroom...again, educational and cute! Do we see a pattern here?

Rebecca has some really ADORABLE kids' art as well as stationery on her site. Be sure to check out her shop and blog as well!
